Location Changes due to Daylight Savings

Starting this week, some Wednesday and Thursday evening pickup locations will be moving slightly due to the change in time and it getting darker earlier. This change ensures that customers don’t have to pick up their produce in the dark. If you come to your pickup spot and the truck is not in it’s usual location, look for the part of the parking lot with the most lighting – the truck and tables will be there. For LYNCHBURG subscribers: your pickup spot is moving to the parking lot BEHIND the church to take advantage of lighting there. You won’t be able to see this spot from the front of the church, where you usually pick up.

Frozen Blueberries

Soon we will have frozen blueberries in the shares, but we will also have extra frozen 10-lb. boxes available as well. If you would like to order a box of frozen blueberries, click here. We have 18 boxes left.

Get your turkeys!

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching (it’s in two weeks, ya’ll!) and the turkeys aren’t going to cook themselves. If you haven’t ordered one of our local, pasture-raised birds yet, you can do so here or at your pickup location. Please note that we cannot reserve a turkey for you until we’ve recieved the down payment.

Photo Contest

This week’s winner, Sabine Dunias, submitted a tempting picture of a butternut squash soup she made. The cozy lighting and beautiful details make us all want to curl up by the fire with a bowl of this deliciousness (or just come to Sabine’s house). We hope it inspires you! This week’s decision was difficult, as we had some pretty awesome Honorable Mentions:
“I just love this pumpkin that my husband, Mark, made this year. It’s one of our favorites!” – from Lisa Tripodi
“Autumn’s Rainbow” – from Eliza and Geoff Barstow

Keep sending us your photos. The Contest is weekly and the prize is a $15 a la carte credit!

We have TONS of Jack’O'Lanterns, so if you or your friends need pumpkins, look no further. They are $3.00 each and you can get them at the A La Carte table or directly from our warehouse. We also have a very special kind of pumpkin called a Cinderella pumpkin (see photo above). Not only is it a beautiful centerpiece for a festive occasion, but it is also edible. We will sell them at the pickup locations for $9 each.

If you decide to get really creative with your Horse and Buggy Produce pumpkins or squash, we’d love some pictures for our newsletter or Facebook page. Send in your creations and we’ll share your ideas with other subscribers.

Happy Autumn, Everybody!
~the H&BP Team

Basil

If you ordered basil, you can pick it up this week. We also have a little bit more available – mostly purple – and we will be bringing it to the pickup locations to sell a la carte. The purple basil is just as tasty and makes great pesto, so get some summer flavors while they are still here.

Week 25

Howdy, Folks!

*apple cider
*Jack O Lantern
*Ghost pumpkin
*lettuce
*Empire apples
*tomatoes
*sweet peppers
*zucchini and/or yellow squash
*butter beans

You are welcome to trade in the Jack’O'Lantern for something else (since we ARE supposed to be putting food and not decorations in your shares). But we figured since you already eat local, you might as well decorate local. And this year has been a VERY good one for pumpkins, so we’re able to give you a lot more this year for a cheaper price.

For a great early fall dinner, make some gorgeous ratatouille with your zucchini, yellow squash, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant (ALC table). You can find the recipe here.

A la carte:

*watermelon (super cheap: $2.50 for one or $4.50 for two)
*cucumbers (Pickle while there’s still time!)
*green beans
*beets (Who made Ukrainian borsch last week?)
*sweet peppers
*snack peppers
*okra
*lima beans
*eggplant
*corn (We are surprised, too. It’s pretty late in the season for corn.)
*bread
*granola
*sweet potatoes
*potatoes
*squash (Butternut, Delicata, Carnival)
*maple syrup (now in gallon sizes!)
*honey
*apple butter

Bon Appetit!

Basil, Corn and Green Beans in bulk

BASIL: 1- or 5-lb. increments, green or purple, $13/lb.
Note: It may not be available for pickup till next week.

CORN: 1 bag (60 ears) for $25

GREEN BEANS: half bushel (about 11 lbs.) for $16

You can buy all these online.

Apple Cider!

You know it’s fall when the apple cider appears. This week we’ll provide Family shares with a gallon and Couple shares with a half-gallon plastic container free of charge (Single shares will get one next week), but after that you must either bring it back for refills or pay for a new one. You are also welcome to bring your own container – just make sure it’s the right size!

Thanksgiving Turkeys

This year the turkeys will be smaller – about 12 pounds – and around $4.5/lb. Though they’re not up on the shopping cart yet, you can start reserving them right now. If you want to use your ALC credit to purchase one, email us and we’ll take care of it. More details to follow!

Lost Basket

One of our Downtown subscribers left a special basket at the evening pickup several weeks ago. It is a large round split oak basket colored brown with age (it used to be white) that had a Lambkin melon in it. It has sentimental value, so if someone accidentally took it home, please return it to our office.

A little canning inspiration

Paula Stoler drives away with two bushels of corn.

If you’re dreading that point in the not-so-distant future when you’ll have to start grocery shopping at a supermarket again and buying produce shipped from California (at best), consider setting aside a few days to stock up on some local produce for the winter. Canning and freezing produce in large quantities lets you eat local all year round.

Paula Stoler has been experimenting all summer. She’s been using a book called Stocking Up: The Third Edition of the Classic Preserving Guide by Carol Hupping and the Staff of the Rodale Food Center. Paula has stocked up on green beans, tomatoes, apricots, basil (in yummy pesto form) and now, corn. This is her first year canning and she seems to have caught right on.
No store-bought spaghetti sauce for us. We’ve got our own!

Meanwhile, back at the office:

*Brett spent a weekend making Concord grape juice for the winter;

*Christine (the Pro) canned strawberry jam, peaches and tomatoes; and froze a bunch of corn;

*Carly and Masha tried to can for the first time in their lives – and succeeded! The result is 23 quart-jars of tomato sauce, all ready for the winter. They used Barbara Kingsolver’s’ recipe, found here, and googled everything else. A good resource is the company that makes the jars, Ball. They have some how-to videos on their website and tons of recipes.Right now, we’re selling basil in 5-lb. increments – great for making pesto that you can freeze and enjoy all winter long. We are also selling 20-lb. boxes of canning tomatoes. You can order both of these items here.

Lost some pearls in Richmond?

They’re fake, but that doesn’t mean they’re not special. If they’re yours, give us a call or email, and we’ll make sure they get back to you this week.
