Week 20

Meg (a.k.a. Horton) waits for her watermelon clutch to hatch.

Read on to find out about our writing contest, peaches, buying concord grapes and selling your figs (really).

Howdy, Folks!

Wonder how big that watermelon is? One hundred pounds! (Well, more like 97, but who’s counting?) We’re giving it away as a prize to the person who writes the best story involving Horse and Buggy Produce, true or fictional. There are no age limits – both children and adults can submit. Send it to masha@horseandbuggyproduce.com. The deadline is midnight on Sunday, August 29. We’ll publish the story in our next newsletter, and you’ll go home with dessert for your neighborhood.

Speaking of sweet things, this is the last week for peaches, so enjoy them. We’ve gotten some complaints that the peaches last week were too bruised. Our farmers don’t grow their fruit for it’s shelf life – they grow it for it’s taste! If you get a bruised peach, turn it into a delicious sauce for your ice cream or freeze it for a mid-winter peach cobbler that will remind you of warm days.

While this week feels more like fall, the produce in your shares is still as summery as it gets:

*watermelon
*orange or yellow watermelon (family shares only)
*lettuce
*pears
*snack peppers
*tomatoes
*peaches
*green beans
*Carmen peppers

A la carte:

*cherry tomatoes
*pear tomatoes
*heirloom tomatoes
*potatoes (red heirloom, blue heirloom, fingerling)
*onions
*apples
*nectarines
*eggplant
*ocra
*cucumbers
*urn planters

Bon appetit!

Concord grapes

Concord grapes were supposed to be here THIS week, but because of the rain they are not quite ready yet. We promise to have them next week and the week after that. They will be in the shares, but if you want a little extra (for grape juice or jelly), you can order them by emailing the office. We are selling them for $1.95/lb, or $17.50 for a 10-lb box.

Figs

If you grow figs, or know somebody who does, Horse & Buggy wants to buy them from you! Send an email to the office, letting us know:

1) how much fruit you plan on harvesting,
2) when they’ll be ripe, and
3) how much you want to sell them for.

Week 19

Howdy, folks!

Kids are going back to school and although it’s still ridiculously hot, leaves are starting to turn already. Before you know it, fall will be here. While it’s still August, grab some friends, have a cookout and enjoy the bounty of late summer with this week’s colorful share:

*watermelon
*basil
*green beans
*peaches
*heirloom tomatoes
*colored peppers
*cucumbers
*beets or yellow squash (depending on location)

A la carte:

*potatoes
*onions
*eggplant
*corn
*tomatoes
*cantaloupes
*raspberries
*blackberries
*pears (woo-hoo!)
*apples
*nectarines
*Roma tomatoes
*cut flowers
*urn planters
*hostas

The red tomatoes are being picked early this year due to the heat and rain, so let them finish ripening 4-5 days on a sunny counter. The heirloom tomatoes, however, are super perishible and should be eaten within several days.

Concord grapes are on their way! You should see them on the tables in a few weeks.

Week 18

Linden “Stump” Wenger, our beef farmer, and his granddaughter, Brittany Rose

Howdy, Folks!

Here’s what you’re getting this week:

*lettuce
*peaches
*apples
*cantaloupe
*watermelon
*green beans
*potatoes
*peppers

We’re sorry to say that the lettuce this week is slightly yellow due to an iron deficiency. We are putting them in your shares at a discount, so they don’t make up as much of your share value as regular lettuce would. The peaches, however, are fantastic and won’t be around much longer – maybe two more weeks – so enjoy them while they’re in season!

A la carte:

*pullet eggs
*popcorn
*honey
*maple syrup
*apple butter
*bread
*granola
*cucumbers
*hot peppers
*beets
*raspberries
*blackberries
*sweet onions
*heirloom tomatoes
*Roma tomatoes
*fingerling potatoes
*blue heirloom potatoes
*red heirloom potatoes
*yellow squash
*zucchini
*plums
*corn
*eggplant

There are still 5 bison shares and one-time fruit shares available.

Week 17

Howdy, Folks!

This week, expect:

*peaches
*apples
*plums
*bell peppers
*corn
*tomatoes
*cantaloupe

…and one more surprise item, different for every pickup location

If you’re wondering what to do with your cantaloupe (or peaches, or watermelon), the summer 2010 publication of Edible Blue Ridge came out with some great cocktail ideas from local restaurants. You can grab a copy at natural food stores like Feast and Integral Yoga (in Charlottesville), or you can find them online here.

One-time goat cheese shares

For those of you who ordered one-time goat cheese shares, they will NOT be ready next week. Our cheese maker, unfortunately, had a power outage and has fallen behind schedule. As soon as she catches up and makes them, we’ll deliver them to you!

Eggs

We still do not have any extra eggs available for purchase. The heat has really taken a toll on the chickens and they are not laying as much. ALL THE EGGS this week ARE FOR EGG SUBSCRIBERS ONLY.

Bison shares

Bison shares will be delivered next week. We have seven available shares left. Please click here for more information.

Lamb shares

There is one lamb share left. Click here to order it..
